1) I owned a Sony TV Bravia Model KDL 46EX620, bought on 2012; I used the TV to display picture and sound coming from variety of input sources; For example from the over the air TV channels / stations such as over the air public channel KQED; over the air KBS Korean broadcast station to watch Korean drama with English sub title. I connected the standard digital optical output of the Sony TV to the digital optical input of my Yamaha receiver model RX-V373 which power the external speakers. The digital audio signal via optical output terminal is so standard that most modern TV provides such an output. the Sony TV further provides analog audio signal output via typical RCA connectors that I did not have to use because the standard digital optical output of the Sony TV provides good sounds for all of the over the air TV channels / stations.In other words, the Sony TV is able to convert whatever different digital audio formats associated with the sources / channels being broadcasted by the specific over the air stations / channels (i.e. varieties of Dolby formats and/or DTS formats.. from the sources) and converted down to basic stereo sound that can be received and decoded by any receiver that has an digital optical input. As the result, the sound of the Sony TV build in speaker is the same as the sound of the external speaker using the digital optical output.I also use the analog output of the TV (i.e. the RCA connectors) to connect to the Vocopro DA-200Pro Digital Key control Karaoke mixer (The digital key control is a very useful feature found in virtually all karaoke hardware and software players. It allows the key of the music to be adjusted up or down by small increments (steps) without affecting the tempo of the song)2) I read a lot of reviews and decided to bought from Costco the Samsung 55" Samsung UN55NU8000FXZAThe Samsung TV costs $900 quite expensive, it does have vibrant color as being reviewed. HoweverI am very disappointed with the audio output of the Samsung TV. It does not provide the analog stereo output, therefore I could not use the Vocopro DA-200Pro Digital Key control directly.Moreover the Samsung TV have problems with converting the audio for over the air TV channels /stations when using the digital optical output.When using the digital optical output, at certain over the air channels the voice is muff fed so bad and only some background sound is heard; at certain over the air channels the voice is heard then when the commercial portion is broadcasted, the voice is muffed. At certain channel the volume / the sound is too loud comparing with the volume / the sound of other channel. Most of the over the air stations / channels have one or more of the above sound problems.None of these problems occurring when using the internal speakers.Samsung does not give a hard copy of the user manual when purchased the Samsung TV. When I downloaded the emanual / TV user manual from its web site. At page 36 of the user manual , it said "Digital Audio is only available with 5.1 channel broadcast". And this appears to acknowledge and confirm that Samsung TVs have optical audio problems; the Samsung TVs cannot convert down any digital formats (any varieties of Dolby formats and/or DTS formats and others digital audio formats being broadcasted) to a simple stereo format that any receivers can decoded and used for external speakers as I mentioned above; Other TV can do that.When I goggles "Samsung optical audio not working", it seems other Samsung customers having the same issues. Some Samsung customers suggested to set the Samsung TV digital optical output to PCM mode. I have tried that however it does not work. That is all of the over the air broadcasted stations / channels still having the same digital optical audio problems as discussed above. I don't understand what "Decoded from source" means, because it still does not indicate the output protocol, but only tells me that the TV is capable of interpreting the source. However, in my instance it provides the information I needed (I was getting PCM output). Unfortunately, it also means that the device I connected should have worked, but it did not—and a call to customer support demonstrated that Samsung is not capable of providing help to get it working. The guy I talked to seemed to not know what the word "protocol" means, and sure didn't know about "PCM," and did not offer to transfer my call to a more technical person (who probably wouldn't have been able to help either, since an engineer was probably needed). I then bought the TLC Model 55S405 55" TV from Amazon prime for a price of $350. The color is slightly less vibrant than the Samsung TV UN55NU8000FXZA. However the TCL TV have the digital optical audio output that works perfectly. That is when the TCL TV audio is set to optical and PCM mode; And regardless different digital audio formats being broadcasted by the specific over the air TV channels / stations, it converted to basic stereo audio signal that any AV receiver with a standard digital optical input can process to the external speakers;In addition, the TCL TV has an earphone output (analog audio signal out) which I can connected to the Vocopro DA-200Pro Digital Key control Karaoke mixer for my Karaoke singing.With the price half of the expensive Samsung and Sony TV, and I also bought 4 years guarantee $15, the TCL TV is a value and better buy.
